Under 18's braces

It’s common for orthodontic treatment to begin in the teenage years, once all or most of the permanent teeth have come through. At that point it becomes clear whether someone might have dental concerns such as significant crowding, an over or underbite, or difficulty biting the teeth together which might affect eating or properly cleaning the teeth.

In cases where these issues are significant, braces will be available on the NHS. They assess who will receive braces according to a scoring system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, or IOTN score.

Some teens may not meet the IOTN score, in which case the NHS treatment is not available, or the waiting list in their area may be very long meaning they are unable to start treatment quickly. That is why we have a range of affordable private orthodontic treatments available for teenagers.

    Metal fixed appliances consist of small metal brackets attached to the teeth with a wire tied into the brackets. The wires are then used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist control over the tooth movements. The ties can be coloured giving you the option to customise the brace.

    Iconix braces are a sophisticated and elegant alternative to traditional braces. These braces are made of stainless-steel champagne-coloured brackets that provide aesthetics of rose gold attached to the teeth with a wire tied into the brackets. The wires are then used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist control over the tooth movements.

    Clear aligners offer a virtually invisible way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, customised removable aligners that fit snugly over your teeth. Advanced technology allows you to visualise your completed treatment. This is a great option for those wanting a more discreet, wire free treatment.

  • Miss.Caroline McCarthy (Orthodontist) Qualified from: BDS, M MedSci Oral Surg Sheff,United Kingdom, 1997 GDC No: 73283
    Caroline is a Specialist Orthodontist and a Consultant at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. Having qualified from Sheffield University in 1997, Caroline worked in general and children’s dentistry. She became a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and obtained her first Master’s degree in Oral Surgery, with distinction, in 2000. She undertook specialist training at the Royal London Hospital and Essex County Hospital where she achieved her second Masters, in Orthodontics in 2003. In 2004, she achieved Membership in Orthodontics, from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, which led to her being recognised by the General Dental Council (GDC) as a Specialist in Orthodontics. She completed her hospital consultancy training in Sheffield and in 2007 gained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery, in Orthodontics, from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She was a Consultant in Doncaster for 14 years as well as her current role at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. She is passionate about patient-centred care and achieving the best results. Being a mother of two teenagers, she understands the needs of children and is dedicated to providing them the very best treatment and care. Outside of work Caroline enjoys running, golf and walking her dog Billy.
  • Mrs.Tania Murphy (Orthodontist) Qualified from: BDS, MMedSci(Oral Surg), MFDSRCS(Ed), MMedSci(Orth), MOrth, FDS(Orth), FDS(Orth)RCS(Ed) United Kingdom, 1996 GDC No: 71901
    Tania is a Specialist Orthodontist who has extensive experience providing high quality orthodontics. She is passionate about improving smile aesthetics for all. Since qualifying as a dentist from the University of Sheffield in 1996, Tania continued to develop her expertise and obtained her first Master’s degree in Oral Surgery in 1999. She was awarded her Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery in 2000 and in 2002 achieved her second Master’s degree in Orthodontics. Tania continued her development and in 2003 she achieved Membership in Orthodontics, from the Royal College of Surgeons, England, which led to her being recognised by the General Dental Council (GDC) as a Specialist in Orthodontics. In 2005 she gained the Fellowship in Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Tania has recently stepped down from the role of NHS orthodontic consultant, a position she held for 16 years. Tania specialises in Invisalign and conventional fixed appliance systems and prides herself on working with the best orthodontic products on the market which is proven within the quality of her work. Out of work, Tania is a busy mum of two children. Her main passions are watching live music, food and travel.
