Under 18's braces

It’s common for orthodontic treatment to begin in the teenage years, once all or most of the permanent teeth have come through. At that point it becomes clear whether someone might have dental concerns such as significant crowding, an over or underbite, or difficulty biting the teeth together which might affect eating or properly cleaning the teeth.

In cases where these issues are significant, braces will be available on the NHS. They assess who will receive braces according to a scoring system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, or IOTN score.

Some teens may not meet the IOTN score, in which case the NHS treatment is not available, or the waiting list in their area may be very long meaning they are unable to start treatment quickly. That is why we have a range of affordable private orthodontic treatments available for teenagers.

    Metal fixed appliances consist of small metal brackets attached to the teeth with a wire tied into the brackets. The wires are then used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist control over the tooth movements. The ties can be coloured giving you the option to customise the brace.

    Iconix braces are a sophisticated and elegant alternative to traditional braces. These braces are made of stainless-steel champagne-coloured brackets that provide aesthetics of rose gold attached to the teeth with a wire tied into the brackets. The wires are then used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist control over the tooth movements.

    Clear aligners offer a virtually invisible way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, customised removable aligners that fit snugly over your teeth. Advanced technology allows you to visualise your completed treatment. This is a great option for those wanting a more discreet, wire free treatment.

  • Miss.Caroline McCarthy (Orthodontist) Qualified from: BDS, M MedSci Oral Surg Sheff,United Kingdom, 1997 GDC No: 73283
    Dr. Caroline McCarthy is a Specialist Orthodontist with us at Brinsworth and Rotherham. She is also a Orthodontic Consultant at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. Alongside this she was also a consultant in Doncaster for 14 years. Caroline qualified in 1997 and worked in general and children’s dentistry. She then became a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and obtained her first Master’s degree in Oral Surgery in 2000. With continuing progression, she then undertook specialist training in 2003 at the Royal London Hospital and Essex County Hospital where she achieved her second Masters in Orthodontics. In 2004 she gained Membership in Orthodontics, from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Caroline is dedicated to ensuring the best patient outcomes and experiences for her patients. She covers all aspects of teeth straightening, including, fixed metal braces, tooth coloured braces, Invisalign, retention, functional appliances and other fixed and removable braces. Here at our Rotherham practices we ensure that a happy smile is available for everyone and we offer payment plans including interest free braces.   • Mrs.Tania Murphy (Orthodontist) Qualified from: BDS, MMedSci(Oral Surg), MFDSRCS(Ed), MMedSci(Orth), MOrth, FDS(Orth), FDS(Orth)RCS(Ed) United Kingdom, 1996 GDC No: 71901
    Dr. Tania Murphy is a Specialist Orthodontist covering our, Rotherham centre, Brinsworth and Scunthorpe practices. Tania qualified as a Dentist in 1996 from the University of Sheffield, she continued to develop her expertise and obtained her first Master’s degree in Oral Surgery in 1999. She then became a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery in 2000. This was quickly followed by the achievement of her second Masters degree in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons, England. In 2005 she then achieved the Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England for Orthodontics. After 16 years working as an NHS Orthodontic Consultant Tania stepped down from this role. Tania specialises in all aspects of teeth straightening, from fixed metal braces, tooth coloured braces, Invisalign, retention, functional appliances and other fixed and removable braces. She prides herself on working with the best orthodontic systems on the market to ensure exceptional treatment outcomes. Treatments with Tania are available on payment plans, including interest free finance options to cover the cost of braces. Outside of work Tania enjoys spending time with her two children, attending live music events, food and travel.
