Under 18's braces

It’s common for orthodontic treatment to begin in the teenage years, once all or most of the permanent teeth have come through. At that point it becomes clear whether someone might have dental concerns such as significant crowding, an over or underbite, or difficulty biting the teeth together which might affect eating or properly cleaning the teeth.

In cases where these issues are significant, braces will be available on the NHS. They assess who will receive braces according to a scoring system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, or IOTN score.

Some teens may not meet the IOTN score, in which case the NHS treatment is not available, or the waiting list in their area may be very long meaning they are unable to start treatment quickly. That is why we have a range of affordable private orthodontic treatments available for teenagers.

Metal
fixed braces

Metal fixed appliances consist of small metal brackets attached to the teeth with a wire tied into the brackets. The wires are then used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist control over the tooth movements. The ties can be coloured giving you the option to customise the brace.
Clear
aligners

Clear aligners offer a virtually invisible way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, customised removable aligners that fit snugly over your teeth. Advanced technology allows you to visualise your completed treatment. This is a great option for those wanting a more discreet, wire free treatment.
Invisalign

Miss.Jamie Fielding (Orthodontic Therapists) Qualified from: Dip Orth Therapy Royal College of Surgeons Of England 2010 England, 2010 GDC No: 120838

Jamie first qualified as a dental nurse in 1997 in general practice. She was quickly promoted to the role of Head Nurse. In 2003 Jamie started working at The Orthodontic Centre, Sheffield where she gained further qualifications in Radiography and Orthodontic Nursing. Jamie decided that she wanted to train to be an Orthodontic Therapist and qualified in 2010 with a Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy from the Royal College of Surgeons England. Whilst undergoing the training, Jamie gained experience of working in Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and the Leeds Dental Institute. Jamie says how she thoroughly enjoys her role and seeing the results they create as a team, as we all work together to create our patients’ dream smile, whether that be through Invisalign, Braces, Aligners or any other teeth straightening treatment. When Jamie is away from work, she is busy being a mother and loves getting outdoors with her boys.
Mr.David Tinsley (Orthodontist) Qualified from: BDS, MDSc, MFDSRCS(Ed), MMedSci, MOrthRCS(Ed) United Kingdom, 1990 GDC No: 66247

David qualified as a dentist in 1990 at Kings in London. In 1993 he obtained his first Master’s degree from Dundee in restorative dentistry. He then spent several years at Leeds Dental Institute as a lecturer. He obtained his Fellowship in 2000, second Masters in 2002 and qualified as an orthodontist at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and Chesterfield Royal Hospital. With David’s 20 years’ experience as a specialist orthodontist, he has provided different teeth straightening treatment options including fixed brace appliances, both steel and ceramic and also Invisalign. He is a gold standard Invisalign provider and enjoys using this aligner system to create new smiles in the Sheffield area. David embraces new technology and techniques within teeth straightening, as he’s always striving to expand his knowledge in Orthodontics. Outside of work, David is keen golfer and loves to spend time with friends and family.
Mr.Jon O'Dwyer (Orthodontist) Qualified from: BDS, FDSRCS(Glasg), MMedSci, MOrthRCS(Ed) United Kingdom, 1990 GDC No: 65764

Jonathan qualified as a dentist in 1990 from the University of Sheffield. After several years working hospitals and practices locally, he went on to the three-year specialist training programme, obtained my Masters in 2002 and qualified as an Orthodontic Specialist in 2003. Jonathan is a member of the British Orthodontic Society and the British Dental Association and regularly attend seminars and courses to stay up to date with the latest orthodontic innovations. With his long experience in orthodontics, he offers the full range of teeth straightening treatments - including Invisalign, ceramic and lingual/invisible braces and can offer the most appropriate treatment for your problem, lifestyle, and income. Out of work Jonathan enjoys playing golf (but unfortunately not that well), going to the cinema, holidays in Cornwall and taking his dog out walking in the local woods and visiting the Peak District.
Mrs .Roopal Parmar Qualified from: BDS Sheff, 2005 GDC No: 85642

Roopal Parmar studied at Sheffield university in 2005. where she now lives with her husband and two children, whilst providing dental treatments to the Sheffield and Kelham Island area. She was raised in Leeds with her parents and joined {my}dentist in 2011. Roopal is passionate about delivering and providing the highest quality of treatment and patient care and has experience in all aspects of general dentistry including treatments like teeth whitening, dentures and composite bonding. Roopal has also developed her skills to offer private treatments in Clear Correct in addition to the dental aligner options she can offer, Roopal always ensures she has happy patients who have a confident smile. In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her husband and two children, travelling at every opportunity possible.

Alison has a passion for promoting oral health and enjoys educating & empowering her patients in prevention and management of dental diseases. Throughout her career, Alison has enjoyed the multi-disciplinary approach to dentistry – perfect for our close-knit team! She also strives to provide holistic care for her patients by giving them the knowledge to take control of their oral health and teeth straightening journey – be it through traditional braces, Invisalign, invisible braces (lingual braces) and retainers. Creating a calm, relaxing environment for her patients whilst providing a high standard of treatment is where Alison's excels, her gentle approach ensuring anxious patients are put at ease. In Alison's spare time she teaches Zumba, Ballet & Figure Skating. Debbie qualified as a dental nurse in 1987. She then went on to gaining National Certificates in Orthodontic Nursing and Conscious Sedation Nursing. Debs has been working in the dental field since leaving school. She has worked in NHS and private practice, the maxillofacial department at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. Debbie joined us here in Sheffield, working alongside the specialist orthodontists who provide teeth straightening treatments such as Invisalign and braces. Out of work Debbie loves swimming, walking, reading, and spending time with the family.
Mrs.Yvonne Barber (Orthodontic Therapists) Qualified from: Dip Orth Therapy RCS Eng 2008 United Kingdom, 2008 GDC No: 117755

Yvonne started as a trainee dental nurse in general practice in 1983. Qualifying in 1985. She then went on to work at Chesterfield Royal Hospital as a maxillofacial and orthodontic nurse from 1987 - 2007. Whilst working as a dental nurse, she gained qualifications in national certificate in Orthodontic Nursing and Conscious Sedation Nursing. Yvonne started working with us at The Orthodontic Centre in 2007 as a student orthodontic therapist at Leeds Dental Institute 2007. She then trained in both our practices and the hospital qualifying in 2008 Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy from the Royal College of Surgeons England, and now works across the Sheffield area, alongside our specialist orthodontists who provide teeth straightening treatments such as Invisalign. Outside of work, Yvonne enjoys her holidays, fitness, and spending time with her family.

Fixed Braces Treatment

Jack came to us for fixed metal braces and started his teeth straightening journey with us in our Kelham Island Smile Suite practice in Sheffield with Jon O'Dwyer. We straightened Jack’s teeth using fixed braces in just over 12 months. Using fixed braces is one of the most precise ways to control tooth movement with wires which are used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist Jon complete control over tooth movements. Such an amazing teeth straightening result and Jack was more than happy with his new smile!

Twin block and fixed brace treatment

This patient required a twin block appliance alongside a fixed brace. Within 15 months we have been able to straighten this patient's teeth and correct the bite. This patient was treated by Mr. O'Dwyer.

Megan came to us for fixed braces, and started her teeth straightening journey with us here at Kelham Island Smile Suite practice in Sheffield with our experienced specialist Jon O'Dwyer. Megan’s teeth were straightened using a twin block appliance and fixed braces in just 18 months! Fixed braces are an incredibly accurate way to move the teeth. The wires are used to move the teeth into the desired position and give the orthodontist Jon precise control over the way the teeth move. The results were incredible - such a transformation and both Megan and her mum were delighted with Megan's new smile!

Natalie attended Kelham Island Smile Suite Sheffield for an NHS assessment and opted for one of our private treatment options, Invisalign clear aligners. Invisalign is a great option as it has minimal impact on people's lifestyles. This patient came to us with a 9.5mm overjet. With use of the twin block appliance for 6 months and then further fixed brace treatment, we were able to reduce this massively. This patient was treated by Mr. O'Dwyer.
