Looking after your teeth and gums
What you do at home is just as important as attending regular dental appointments.
A consistent daily routine can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, protect your enamel and keep your mouth feeling healthy.
Brush twice a day
Brush your teeth for around two minutes, twice a day, using a fluoride toothpaste.
Make sure you clean every surface of each tooth, including:
- The front
- The back
- The biting surfaces
- Along the gumline
Most people miss the same areas each time they brush. Taking your time and following the same pattern each day can help you clean more thoroughly.
Spit out the toothpaste when you have finished, but do not rinse with water. This allows the fluoride to remain on your teeth for longer.
Clean between your teeth
A toothbrush cannot fully clean the spaces between your teeth. Plaque and food debris can build up in these areas, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Clean between your teeth every day using:
- Interdental brushes
- Dental floss
- Another cleaning aid recommended by your dentist or hygienist
Interdental brushes come in different sizes. You may need more than one size to clean your whole mouth effectively.
The brush should fit comfortably between your teeth without being forced. Your dental team can show you which sizes and products are most suitable for you.
Think about when you use mouthwash
Mouthwash should not usually be used immediately after brushing, as it may wash away the fluoride left behind by your toothpaste.
Use it at a different time of day, such as after lunch, if it has been recommended by your dental team.
Reduce sugary food and drinks
Frequently eating or drinking sugar increases the number of acid attacks on your teeth.
Try to:
- Keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes
- Avoid grazing throughout the day
- Choose water between meals
- Check food and drink labels for hidden sugars
