Dental care for neurodivergent patients

Dental care can feel more difficult for some neurodivergent people.

Sensory sensitivities, difficulties with routine, executive function, communication or anxiety may all affect brushing, cleaning between the teeth or attending appointments.

There is no single approach that works for everyone. The most helpful routine is one that feels realistic, manageable and suited to your needs.

Making daily dental care easier

You may find it helpful to:

1

Brush at a consistent time each day

2

Use reminders, alarms or a visual checklist

3

Keep your toothbrush and toothpaste somewhere easy to see

4

Choose an unflavoured or milder toothpaste

5

Try a different toothbrush texture or head size

6

Use an electric toothbrush with a timer

7

Break brushing into smaller stages

8

Sit down while brushing

9

Use a mirror, music or video as part of your routine

10

Ask someone you trust for prompts or support

Some people find foaming toothpaste, strong flavours, vibration or certain textures difficult. Trying different products may help you find something more comfortable.

Do not stop using fluoride toothpaste without speaking to your dentist. Your dental team may be able to recommend a suitable alternative.
