From wide-leg jeans to chunky trainers, Y2K fashion has made a confident return. But it’s not just wardrobes that are embracing nostalgia. A more unexpected trend is sparkling its way back into the spotlight — dental jewellery.
Tooth gems and metal grills are once again being spotted on red carpets, social feeds and music videos. With artists like PinkPantheress and CMAT showcasing tooth gems, and renewed interest in statement grills across fashion and pop culture, it’s clear dental bling is capturing attention once again. But while these accessories can feel like a fun form of self-expression, dentists are keen to ensure people understand the potential oral health risks.
Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist, explains that both tooth gems and grills can make maintaining oral hygiene more challenging.
Do tooth gems or dental grills damage teeth?
When asked for her insight on how dental jewellery can affect your oral health, Nyree commented: “Even with professional application, tooth gems make brushing your teeth slightly harder. The gem creates a tiny ledge where plaque and food particles can easily accumulate. If your brushing is compromised, this trapped plaque could lead to tooth decay.”
Similarly, wearing grills requires extra care and discipline. Nyree commented: “You must brush and floss your natural teeth thoroughly before putting the grill in, and again immediately after taking it out. You must also clean the grill itself daily using antibacterial solutions recommended by a dental professional.”
How to remove a dental grill or tooth gem
Another important consideration is how these accessories are removed. While it may be tempting to take matters into your own hands once the novelty wears off, dentists strongly advise against this.
When asked for her advice, Nyree commented: “When you grow tired of your tooth gem, you might feel tempted to pick it off yourself, but you must resist this urge. Removal should always be done by a trained dental professional.
Attempting removal at home can result in chipped enamel, discolouration or long-term cosmetic damage.
What should I consider before getting a tooth gem or dental grill?
Fit and materials play a significant role in the safety of your dental bling – and can have a lasting impact on your smile. Custom-made grills created from accurate impressions or digital scans are far less likely to trap food and bacteria than cheaper, ill-fitting alternatives.
Nyree commented: “The materials you place in your mouth matter. You should only use high-quality, mouth-safe materials. Cheap base metals can oxidise or stain teeth over time.”
While dental jewellery may be trending once again, Nyree emphasises that long-term oral health should always come first: “By relying on dental professionals, choosing high-quality materials and maintaining a strict hygiene routine, you can reduce the risks. If you’re thinking about trying a tooth gem or grill, speak to your dentist for advice.”
