Everybody wants a whiter smile, but there is little understanding of what actually works, and who can perform whitening. By law, only dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists and clinical dental technicians (working to the prescription of a dentist) can carry out tooth whitening; however the GDC are prosecuting an alarming number of non registrants for the illegal practice of dentistry.

Some shop bought whitening kits on the shelves and online advertise to whiten your teeth by up to a possible 12 shades. However, many kits available only contain 0.1% peroxide, which is too little to be effective at all.

In an Independent study commissioned by the General Dental Council, one in five people said they would choose a beauty clinic, salon or other location, or home tooth whitening kit as their option for whitening. Our very own non-executive director and former Chief Dental Officer for NHS England, Barry Cockcroft says: “It’s really vital that patients wishing to whiten their teeth realise that it must be carried out by a registered dental professional.”
