About mydentist, Old Mill Lane, Formby

Welcome to {my}dentist Formby, set just a short distance from both Formby village and the breath taking coastline, we provide dental care to the people of Formby and the surrounding areas. We offer a wide range of treatments both NHS and private. These range from dental implants, endodontics, periodontics and orthodontics to creating bespoke smile makeovers with contemporary composite materials. We have the latest technology with the use of 3D digital planning, using our CBT scanners and intra oral scanners which demonstrates your dream smile makeover prior to commencing treatment. With our practice having a recent extensive makeover you can expect to be treated in comfortable surroundings with both of our Treatment Co-ordinators Hannah and Amy at your service to discuss treatment plans and finance options. The nearest train station to the practice is Freshfield Station which is a ten minute walk away, we are also accessible by bus via Church Road and there is limited parking on site and on the road.

  • Dr.Bara Abdul-Salam (Abdul-Salam & Co Limited) Qualified from: BChD Leeds, UK, 2008 GDC No: 153637
    Dr Bara is a dental surgeon with a keen interest in oral surgery and dental implants. He has over 10 years’ experience in head and neck surgery. He qualified as a dental surgeon from the University of Leeds in 2008 with Honours and Distinction. To further his training, he completed the Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2010.He dedicates a session a week for the past decade to support his colleagues with challenging oral surgery cases where he receives patient referrals from dentists all over the Greater Manchester region. Dr Bara is an extremely caring dentist and is passionate in provide high quality pain free dentistry, Dr Bara is also trained in offering sedation for nervous patients.
  • Dr.Christopher Mark Allen Qualified from: BDS Lpool, United Kingdom, 1989 GDC No: 64726
    After completing his vocational training year in Leicester in 1990, Chris moved back to the North West and worked in Ainsdale from 1990-2001. Chris joined Old Mill Lane Dental Practice at Formby in 2001, during this time he has spent twenty years in the local dental committee. His special interests in the dental field include facial aesthetics, restoring dental implants and Invisalign Go (teeth straightening). Outside of dentistry Chris plays golf and tennis and enjoys archery, gym sessions and Krav Maga. His main interest is rugby, being a lifelong supporter of Leicester Tigers and more recently also playing for Southport RUFC and Waterloo. He was a coach for ten years but now spends most Saturdays in spectators role having played his final game 18 months ago with his three sons.
  • Dr.Eduards Ribakovs Qualified from: Riga Stradins University Latvia, 2005 GDC No: 167866
    Eduards Ribakovs joined the Old Mill Lane team in 2016. He graduated at the Latvian Medical Academy with his dentist degree in 2005 and has worked in the UK since 2009 providing both NHS and private dental treatments. He has improved his skills and knowledge in Cosmetic and Restorative dentistry attending a two year long course run by the head of British Academy of restorative dentistry Paul Tipton and has won an award as Best Dentist of the year in the practical restorative course. Eduards is interested in social and general psychology which helps him in his daily practice to keep patients calm and comfortable. In his spare time he likes to travel and explore the world, getting to know new cultures, traditions and exiting places.
  • Dr.Jennifer Mary Griffith Qualified from: BDS Newcastle, United Kingdom, 2017 GDC No: 271361
    Jen graduated from Newcastle Dental School in 2017, and joined the Formby team in September 2018. She has experience with both NHS and private treatment plans, and has also completed volunteer work in Vietnam, working with orphanages to improve oral health and awareness. Jen is a firm believer in patients receiving, and understanding, all treatment options so that a clear, informed treatment plan can be designed. She also understands that healthy teeth and gums can greatly impact a patient’s overall wellbeing, so is particularly passionate about a preventative and holistic approach to dental care. Jen is committed to developing her undergraduate skills even further, having recently qualified in the Invisalign Go system to realign teeth. Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys yoga, socialising with friends and family and travelling. She has competed in Irish dancing to a high level, and was the President of the Irish Dance Society during her time at university.

    John Mason started at the practice in 1987, and has been committed to providing the highest standards of care. John is passionate about patient care and has attended many postgraduate courses to improve his clinical skills. He is very interested in Implant restorative treatment and works closely with our in-house Implant surgeon. John provides Clear Correct and Invisalign clear removable bracesto correct crowding and improve the appearance of crooked teeth.He is also interested in tooth whitening and cosmetic bonding. John has lived in Formby for many years and is married with two beautiful grown up daughters. Outside of work he enjoys golf (badly) running (slowly), hiking in the lake district, skiing and yoga.

    Dr Varma is an experienced implantologist who visits several clinics across the country to provide implant treatment. He qualified from Manchester University in 2007 and since then he has been dedicated to providing the highest standards of care to his patients. In 2009-2011 he completed three year-long training programmes in restorative and implant dentistry in Manchester with restorative specialist Dr Paul Tipton, and was also awarded the Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons. He then continued with a further degree in Dental Implantology at the University of Central Lancashire, leading to the award of Master of Science with Merit in 2014. He is an active member of the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI), The International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD).
  • Dr.Paul Volynchook Qualified from: BDS Lpool, United Kingdom, 1979 GDC No: 53672
    Paul qualified at Liverpool University Dental Hospital in 1979 and joined the Formby Practice in 1980. He has dedicated his entire busy career here, providing general care for his many loyal patients. Paul offers a wide range of both NHS and private dentistry including tooth whitening, cosmetic dentistry and the restoration of dental implants. He has served as an elected member on Sefton Local Dental Committee representing his local colleagues since 1988 and has held the voluntary position of Treasurer for over twenty years. Paul is a keen football fan. He enjoys walking, running and as many holidays as he can fit in around his work.

    Rachel graduated from Leeds university in 2008. She went on to become a member of the royal college of surgeons and then an SHO in maxillofacial surgery for a short time . She then started working locally in general practice . Rachel has completed several post graduate courses in restorative and cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics. She is an experienced dentist and advanced facial aesthetics practitioner who prides herself on making her patients feel relaxed and providing them with a high standard of treatment & care. Rachel lives locally with her family in Formby. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, bodyboarding, running, cycling and travel.
  • Dr.Rupa Nadendla Qualified from: BDS MFDS India, 2004 GDC No: 256031
    Dr Nadendla qualified from NTR University of Health Sciences in India in 2004. Working in the hospital as an SHO in the maxillofacial surgery department, she gained vast experience within this discipline of dentistry, she worked with many different patient genres and hugely increased her understanding of the hospital services in the UK. Completing the MFDS (Edinburgh) in March 2017, she started working for {my}dentist Westbrook. Rupa has a specialist interest in restorative and preventative dentistry, believing prevention is better than cure. She is a strong advocate for maintaining oral health both within the practice and at home. Working alongside our hygienist, Rupa is an asset to the practice, providing second to none preventative advice, helping to create happy, healthy mouths within the practices patient base. She is an approachable, patient and proactive member of the team. Outside of the practice Rupa is a busy Mum with 2 girls.
  • Dr.Sean Michael Dunne Qualified from: BDS Newcastle University 2019 England, 2019 GDC No: 283521
    Sean Dunne qualified as a dentist in Newcastle in 2019 and started his career in dentistry right here at {my}dentist. Sean enjoys to focus his attention on general dentistry, particularly Oral Health and keeps himself busy getting to know each one of his patients and ensuring they are comfortable and feel welcomed. Sean particularly enjoys educate children on oral hygiene and the importance of a good tooth brushing regime, working closely with parents to install the ethos "prevention is better than cure". In his spare time outside of work, Sean enjoys to watch Sports and spend time with his family and friends.
  • Dr.Tony Dadswell Qualified from: BDS University of Manchester 1985 UK, 1985 GDC No: 60484
    Tony became a practice owner/ partner in 1986 and expanded the practice from 3 to a 9-surgery practice. The practice became a referral centre for orthodontics, endodontics and implantology. Tony enrolled on a 2-year part time orthodontic training course at Manchester University and Preston Hospital and has since been providing orthodontic treatment for thousands of patients over the last 30 years as a dentist with a special interest in orthodontics and Implantology. Tony also has had extensive implantology training in the UK, America, and Europe. Tony joined the {my}dentist team in 2022 and provides the highest quality care for patients of all ages. In his spare time, Tony is an avid sailor, spends lots of time with family and loves the outdoors.
  • Miss.Amy Jones (Treatment co-ordinator) Qualified from: Dental Nurse UK, 2012 GDC No: 226528
    Amy started at the practice in 2006 as a trainee Nurse then qualified in 2009 with a Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing. In recent years she has worked alongside our Implant surgeon in the practice to train as an Implant Nurse which includes attending many courses. In 2017 she took the position of Treatment Coordinator at the practice combining her passion of dentistry with her enthusiasm of customer service. She works closely with all the clinicians at the practice, dealing with their patients and educating them about the different treatments we offer. Amy works at the practice Monday to Friday and provides free consultations to any patients interested in private treatment. She is the point of contact at every step and loves following patients through the journey to their perfect smile! In Amy’s spare time she loves spending time with her family walking her dog Keeping activate with yoga.

    Dr Amy qualified from Newcastle University in 2020. She then went on to complete her foundation training in North Yorkshire in NHS general practice. After foundation year, Dr Amy spent time working in Rotherham General Hospital as a Maxillofacial Surgery SHO which sparked her interest in oral surgery. In 2022, she moved across to Merseyside and worked between Liverpool Dental and Arrowe Park Hospitals, across a wide range of specialities including oral surgery, paediatrics, special care and restorative. Whilst working in hospital, she gained further qualifications with the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and a diploma in providing conscious sedation. Amy has a special interest in Oral Surgery, having gained further experience working in hospital, she is able to undertake more complex extractions within the practice. Her priority is making patients feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
  • Miss.Lydia Madeleine Wai-Jung Chan Qualified from: BDS Newcastle University 2020 England, 2020 GDC No: 290393
    Having qualified in Newcastle, Lydia moved home to Merseyside where she has been working in general practice ever since. She works with both NHS and private patients at the practice. Lydia particularly enjoys working with anxious patients and making them feel comfortable when receiving dental treatment. She has a passion for minimally invasive dentistry and creating patient-centred treatment plans. Lydia understands the importance of preventative dentistry and is a firm believer that prevention is better than cure. Lydia volunteers with Dentaid, providing treatment to asylum seekers and other disadvantaged groups. Outside of work, Lydia enjoys travelling and exploring new destinations. She plays hockey for a local team and likes keeping fit.
  • Mr.Aristomenis Moumtzis Qualified from: Ovidius University, Constantza, Romania Romania, 2001 GDC No: 172897
    Aris graduated from Ovidius University in 2001. After working some years in Greece in a private practice he decided to move to England in 2009 to pursue a postgraduate degree. Until 2012 he worked at a mixed NHS and private clinic in Essex. He was then accepted in Manchester University for a Master Degree in Endodontics. Aris joined IDH/{my}dentist as soon as he graduated from his MSc and embarked on a journey to set up a referral network for endodontic treatment with amazing support of his colleagues and practice manager. He is also sharing his knowledge at Manchester University Dental Hospital as a Clinical Fellow in the postgraduate programme of Endodontics. Aris says “I do what I enjoy, root canal treatments and everything related to them.”
  • Mr.Kafeel Mirza Qualified from: BDS university of Plymouth uk, 2018 GDC No: 279529
    Having graduated in 2018, Kafeel started working in small to large practices with multiple surgeries in the NHS and privately. In addition, Kafeel has gained experience in both primary and secondary care. Kafeel enjoys extracting teeth ranging from simple to surgical extractions. Kafeel’s passion is providing the highest quality of care to my patients and making nervous patients feel at ease. Kafeel believes in building a strong professional relationship with the patient is the most important aspect of delivering the highest standard of care. Outside of dentistry, Kafeel enjoys watching football; being a lifelong fan of Arsenal Football club, as well as cooking on a regular basis.
  • Mr.Satnam Singh Moonga Qualified from: BDS Londio, UK, 1992 GDC No: 68466
    Satnam qualified in 1992 from Kings College School of Medicine and Dentistry, London University. After working in hospital Maxillo-facial units in the Midlands and London, he stared work in mixed general dental services. Following the completion of his Masters in Periodontology, Satnam later returned to Kings College Dental School to teach and supervise undergraduate dental students in the Periodontology Department. He has a range of general dentistry skills and has a particular interest in Periodontology in practice. In his spare time, Satnam likes to spend time with his family as well as travelling to and exploring new countries whenever he can.
  • Mrs.Penny Jackson (Therapist) Qualified from: Hygiene theraphy Newcastle , United Kingdom , 2002 GDC No: 6151
    Penny has been working in dentistry for 27 years , starting her career as a Dental Nurse, gaining valuable experience in patient care and understanding of anxious patients. She then graduated from Newcastle Dental Hospital, gaining Diploma in Dental Hygiene with Distinction and an award for best student achievement. On graduating Penny worked within general dental practice and Maxilla facial and Orthodontists Department @ Arrowepark Hospital. Penny has a specialist interest in Orthodontics and enjoys paediatric dentistry. In 2006 Penny furthered her career by graduating from Bristol Dental Hospital becoming a Dental Therapist, since then has worked in various practices gaining essential skills with patients with implants, periodontal disease and fillings. On a personal interest Penny completed a dietary and nutrition qualification as she has an interest in the holistic effect of nutrition on the body.
  • Ms.Ivanna Synenko (Therapist) Qualified from: Birm United Kingdom, 2015 GDC No: 257902
    Ivanna has joined our team as our Dental Hygienist/Therapist having graduated from Birmingham University in 2015. She is able to carry out procedures on adults - such as scaling and polishing, periodontal treatment and stain removal(Airflow). She is able to carry out fillings and extractions on children. “I believe that Dental Therapists/Hygienists play a very important role in the overall dental health of all patients and this is something I am committed to encouraging patients to achieve. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the improvement patients can make when they respond to the treatment and advice given. I particularly like working with nervous patients and children, spending time to help them improve their confidence.” Ivanna is a member of the British Society of Dental Therapists and likes to go on courses to ensure she keeps up to date. She is a key part of the dental team, helping to provide the best service we can for our patients. At our practice Ivanna is able to see patients for scaling and stain removal (Airflow) under Direct Access with out the patients needing to see the dentist first.

  • Consultation Your initial consultation will be with either our Implant Surgeon or Treatment Coordinator (TCO), who can discuss the different types of implants, single or multiple depending on your need. Following this there may be a need for a more clinical focused consultation.

  • Diagnostic Scans We will carry out a number of digital scans, to build a digital 3D model of your mouth so we can get a clear picture of the area we will place the implant, and a more detailed X-ray using a Cone Beam Computer Tomography scanner so that our Implant surgeon can assess the state of the bone below the gum to get a really clear picture of your treatment need.

  • Treatment Plan Once our experienced implant surgeon has assessed all of you scans they will explain the nature of your treatment, the stages involved and costs. We offer flexible payment options to make implants even more affordable.

  • Commence Treatment Once you are happy we will begin treatment. The length and numbers of appointments will vary depending on the complexity of your particular need, but your Implant Surgeon will have detailed all of this in your treatment plan.

  • Implant Placed Once the implant(s) are placed it may be necessary it might be necessary to allow time for healing before attaching the replacement teeth. Once we are happy the implant has healed we will arrange a series of appointments to fabricate the replacement teeth.

  • Aftercare Your Implant Surgeon will advise you about looking after your implant and may well give you some painkillers to help with the pain over the days after your surgery as well as detailed advice about cleaning the implants and the teeth attached to them.

Chemical peel

Alpha hydroxyl acids are commonly used for superficial chemical peels. Glycolic acid is one of our most popular treatments and takes 20 minutes to complete. Skin will feel immediately fresh and hydrated after a treatment.

Superficial chemical peels can be used on all skin colours - they are gentle enough to minimise pigmentation post procedure complications.

Acid exfolitation removes superficial dead cells, promotes rejuvenation and stimulates collagen in the dermis. This is all scientifically proven and effective to promote skin health.

Skin issues that peels can treat are:

Procedure

During the treatment the skin will be thoroughly cleansed and prepped to allow optimal penetration of the acid. Protective barrier cream is placed around highly sensitive areas like the lips and eye region. The acid is brushed onto the face for up to 5 minutes.

The acid is neutralised thoroughly and cooling towels placed on the face. Hydrating PHA cream and vitamin-enriched serum is massaged into the skin, with a final SPF cream for protection. There is a risk of redness and irritation, but redness and tingling will usually subside after 1-2 hours. Most people will be able to walk out of the clinic fresh faced without any signs of treatment. If stronger acid peels are used there may be more sustained side effects.

Advice

Patients are advised to avoid shaving 24 hours after the procedure and avoid the gym and sauna for 48 hours.

Specific skincare products will be advised. If you use these in conjunction with your chemical peels you will see enhanced results.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy involves puncturing the skin lightly with microinjections whilst adding a skin boosting product.The technique of administration varies however, the technique focuses on the superficial layers of the skin with minimal bruising and bleeding. The action of the minor trauma of the skin allows for cell signalling, this causes a cascade of cellular stimulation which helps in skin rejuvenation. The fibroblasts cells which produce collagen infiltrate the areas which cause the renewal of collagen in the area.

As your facial contour changes with collagen , elastin and bone depletion, natural hyaluronic acid can be injected into the areas of deficiency.

This process happens with age and dermal fillers can not only replace lost volume but can also stimulate the production of collagen improving the quality of your skin over time. The procedure requires an intimate knowledge of facial anatomy and location of blood vessels but also an artistic hand to create a beautiful natural shape.

The type of filler used is a temporary product, they differ in viscosity and can stay in the skin from 3-12 months depending on the appropriate product chosen. Belotero and Juvederm are popular products and create a smooth homogenous effect when injected.

Lip injections with fillers is an art form, an eye for what is beautiful and natural is essential. With delicate instrumentation, lip filler injections can be painless, especially with the aid of local anaesthetic and instruments such as the Midas Touch which reduces pain. Advanced injectors of dermal filler use a cannula technique to administer fillers. This means a small port hole is created near the lip and a blunt ended cannula is used to place dermal filler into the lip. There are significant benefits to this rather than using a sharp needle. Bleeding and bruising are significantly reduced, vessels, nerves and vital structures are protected. Using this cannula technique lip fillers can be done with minimal downtime and very little signs they have taken place.

Toxin injections

Botulinum type A toxin is a purified protein used to temporarily reduce the contraction of muscles causing the overlying skin to wrinkle. The most common area to use this treatment is the upper face region; frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet around the eyes.

Many patients request this treatment when frown lines become noticeable. The area treated in between the eyebrows is called the glabella. If lightly treated we can create a very natural look, where no-one can notice that treatment has been carried out. The frown line does not get a chance to embed further and over time it can become less obvious. If requested, there can still be natural movement of the face and eyebrows so you look expressive and natural. Crows feet can be treated delicately around the eye region. The lines can be smoothed out well and in some instances where dark circles and lines are below the eye, these can be softened. If eye bags are established, fluid filled toxin injections will not be effective. Smoothing the crows feet too much can make the eye bags look more noticable. At the consultation this will be ascertained.

The forehead muscle can be very active in some people. Lines are effectively softened in this area, it is important however to ensure the correct dosage and balance of toxin is used so we do not get a brow drop, where there is heaviness of the brow or drooping.

With expert knowledge and a precise eye this is preventable in many cases.

The specific placement of toxin injectables in the forehead allows for brows to be lifted to create an arch form, or raise them to open the eye. This is more often known as a brow lift. We can also correct asymmetry where eyebrows are in different positions.

Treatments can be tailored for patients who want a more natural look. This is common for patients who are unsure about having invasive treatments. As these toxin injections are prescription medications and used in expert hands, patients should feel confident in the knowledge they are in the best and safest care possible.

How Does it Work?

The toxin works by blocking the transmission of chemical messengers from the nerve to the muscle. This can be a mild, moderate or severe reduction in movement depending on the individual requirements.

Does it hurt?

A very fine needle is used and this treatment does not require any local anaesthetic. Many clients find it as tolerable as waxing or threading. Patients that are concerned with pain or needles may opt for using a topical anaesthetic cream before the procedure.

Before Treatment

This treatment is not to be undertaken by pregnant or breast feeding women, any person taking anti-coagulatant therapy or sufferers of certain neuromuscular conditons.

Before treatment avoid medication which may increase risk of bruising and limit alcohol intake.

After Treatment

You will be advised to keep the targeted or affected muscles active for an hour and to avoid heat or cold temperatures, vigorous exercise, lying down or leaning over for 4-6 hours. The day after treatment, expression should be kept to a minimum and facial treatments should be avoided for 2 weeks.

After treatment it is expected that you will start to see improvement within 2 or 3 days. For some people it may take longer. The full results may be judged at 2-3 weeks. You will be invited to attend a review appointment at 2-3 weeks where the success of the treatment may be assessed and adjusted to your personal treatment plan if necessary.

How long will it last?

Results tend to last 3-5 months. Movement will begin recovering after 8 weeks, frequent treatment intervals of less than 3 months are not recommended. Repeating treatments when movement recovers will deliver optimum results over time.

Preventative Toxin Injections

Use of toxin injections in patients with minimal lines can be beneficial. Using tiny doses of toxin can subtly soften developing lines and wrinkles giving the skin a healthy, radiant look.

Mens skin

Texture and Thickness. Men have thicker, tougher skin caused by testosterone production. This is approximately 25% thicker than women’s. The thicker skin can make the wrinkles under the eyes look more pronounced.

The skin also has a rougher texture, however the androgens cause the skin to be more resistant to ageing. Facial hair which if shaved regularly can cause the skin to be sensitive and can often suffer from shaving bumps.

Hydration

Men have larger pores, increased sweat and lactic production than women. Increased sebum production after puberty accounts for longer lasting acne compared to women. Larger pores and increased sebum production allows for more congestion and blackheads. The increased amount of sweat produced and larger pores mean they are prone to bacterial infection and acne. Men do have more hydrated skin, probably due to the natural humectant effect of sebum and lactic acid.

Sweat production is more excessive in men and this can be localised to under the arm, in the armpit region.

Collagen and sun damage

Men have higher collagen density than women. This essentially means men look younger than women over time. What has been observed by experts is men on the whole do not protect their skin from sun damage. This UV damage negates the benefit of increased collagen.
